The Summer Reading Challenge is launching this Saturday 9th July. All Surrey Libraries are taking part and planning great activities throughout the summer. Watch this video where Molly explains how the Summer Reading Challenge is done.
Who can take part?
The Summer Reading Challenge is open to all primary school-aged children. It is a flexible programme that is designed for all levels of ability.
Location
Run in 95% of UK public libraries and online at summerreadingchallenge.org.uk
At the library
- A child will visit their local library and sign up to the Challenge for free. They receive their Gadgeteers core pack poster.
- They set a personal reading goal for the summer (we recommend six books).
- Borrow and read books, eBooks and audiobooks of their choice. They can read anything they like: fiction, fact books, poetry, joke books, picture books, graphic novels, audiobooks…
- Collect special incentives from the library each time they finish a book.
- Receive a certificate and/or medal for taking part, or for reaching their Challenge goal.
In addition, libraries offer a wide variety of events and activities for families to enjoy throughout the summer.
Online
- Sign up at summerreadingchallenge.org.uk
- Set a personal reading goal for the summer.
- Receive book recommendations and tips for accessing books for free at home.
- Each time they finish a book, the child adds it to their online profile and leaves a review. They unlock digital badges and online rewards along the way.
- Unlock a certificate for reaching their Challenge goal.
Children can also play games, enter competitions, share book recommendations, download activities and more on our free, safe, moderated platform.
At the heart of the Challenge is children choosing and sharing books of their choice, in any format. Novels, fact books, picture books, graphic novels, joke books, eBooks and audiobooks all count towards completing the Challenge.
Brownies visit
2nd Dorking Brownies visited Dorking library on Tuesday. Jo worked hard to create an entertaining but also educational session for everybody. They started by learning about the library and doing a book sorting test.

Jo also told them about Chatterbooks reading group and the Summer Reading Challenge. After we signed everyone up for the Summer Reading Challenge, all the Brownies were split into to teams and had a task to build the highest tower out of… balloons.

To finish the session Jo invited everyone to make the bookmarks and decorate them with the Gadgeteers – the characters from this year’s Summer Reading Challenge theme.

Keep your eyes peeled on our social media channels and in the library for details of our upcoming events, including some brilliant STEM-related workshops for 8-11 year olds!
